Writing numbers in words is needed for cheques, legal documents, invoices, and formal letters, where a figure in digits alone is not enough. The Indian system groups digits differently from the international system: after thousands, it uses lakh and crore, rather than millions and billions. Getting that grouping wrong can change the meaning of an amount, so this tool shows both styles side by side.
Check the words against the digits before you use them on a cheque or a legal document, especially for large amounts. A single word wrong, or a lakh mistaken for a million, can change the amount by a large factor, so a second check is worth the time.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write 1,00,000 in words in Indian style?
In Indian style, 1,00,000 is one lakh. In international style, the same number is one hundred thousand. The digits are the same, but the grouping and the words differ, which is why this tool shows both.
What is the difference between lakh/crore and million/billion?
The Indian system groups digits in twos after the first thousand, giving lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). The international system groups in threes, giving million (1,000,000) and billion (1,000,000,000). One crore equals ten million.
Can I use Number to Words for a cheque?
Yes, for drafting the words, but always check the words against the digits before you write the cheque, and follow your bank's format. A cheque with words and digits that do not match can be rejected.
Are the numbers I convert uploaded or saved?
