Encoding changes text into a form that can travel safely through systems that do not handle certain characters well. Base64 is used for data in emails and APIs, URL encoding is used for characters in web addresses, and HTML encoding is used to show special characters safely on a web page. Decoding reverses the process, turning encoded text back into readable text. The two directions are easy to confuse, so this tool keeps them separate.

Make sure you choose the right encoding for the job, because Base64, URL and HTML encodings look different and are not interchangeable. A Base64 string will not work as a URL parameter, and URL-encoded text will not display correctly as HTML, so pick the encoding that matches where the result will be used.

Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 encoding used for?

Base64 turns binary data or text into a set of safe letters, numbers and symbols that can be sent through systems that only handle plain text, such as emails and some APIs. It is not encryption, and anyone can decode it.

What is URL encoding?

URL encoding replaces characters that have a special meaning in a web address, such as spaces and &, with a % code, so the address is read correctly. A space becomes %20, for example, which is why you sometimes see %20 in links.

Is encoding the same as encrypting?

No. Encoding is a reversible format change that anyone can undo, and it is not meant to hide information. Encryption, by contrast, needs a key and is meant to keep information secret. Do not use encoding to protect passwords or private data.

Is my text uploaded when I encode or decode it?

No. Conversion happens in your browser only. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved after you close the page.
