Barcodes are used on products, tickets, labels, and inventory, because a scanner can read a code far faster and more accurately than a person can type it. Different barcode types suit different uses: EAN and UPC are common on retail products, while CODE128 is widely used for general labelling because it can encode letters and numbers. Choosing the right type matters, because a scanner set up for one type may not read another.
Test the barcode with a scanner before you print it in bulk, and check that the code it reads matches the code you typed. A barcode that looks right but reads wrong, often because the type or the code length is wrong, will cause problems at checkout or in inventory.

Frequently asked questions
Which barcode type should I choose?
Use EAN for most retail products, UPC for products sold in North America, and CODE128 for general labels where you need letters as well as numbers. If a retailer or system specifies a type, use that type, because scanners may be set up for it specifically.
Why will my barcode not scan?
The most common reasons are a code that is too short or too long for the type chosen, a barcode printed too small, or low contrast. Check the code length for the type, print at a good size with dark bars on a light background, and test it with a scanner before bulk printing.
Does a barcode contain the product name or price?
No. A barcode normally contains only a code number. The name, price and other details are looked up from that code in a database or point-of-sale system, so the barcode itself does not need to contain them.
Is my code uploaded when I generate a barcode?
No. Generation happens in your browser only. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved after you close the page.
