Favicon Generator — free online tool guide

Favicon Generator — How to Use It Online for Free

The Favicon Generator turns your photo or logo into a website icon — the small picture shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and phone home screens. It produces the standard sizes from 16px up to 512px, so your site or blog looks complete and recognisable.

A missing favicon makes a website look unfinished — the browser shows a blank globe icon instead. Because the icon is tiny, the design rules differ from normal images: no thin lines, no small text, high contrast. If your full logo does not survive shrinking, use just its first letter or symbol as the icon — most big brands do exactly that.

How to use the Favicon Generator

  1. Drop your logo or image in, or click to choose one.
  2. Check the preview of how the icon will look at small sizes.
  3. Download the icon sizes you need, from 16px to 512px.
  4. Add the files to your website — most site builders have a favicon setting, or the icon is linked in the page head.

A quick example

Your blog has no icon. Take the first letter of its name in your brand colour on a solid background, generate the set here, and add it to the site — now every browser tab shows your mark instead of a blank globe.

Tips for better results

Working with images online

A few ideas help every image job go right. First, always work on a copy — keep the original photo untouched, because edits like cropping and compression cannot be undone in the saved file. Second, know your formats: JPG for photos, PNG for logos and screenshots with sharp edges or transparency, and WebP when the smallest file matters and the destination supports it. Third, dimensions and file size are different problems: dimensions are measured in pixels (width × height), size in kilobytes — and forms often limit both. Finally, do the destructive steps last: crop and rotate first, resize next, and compress only at the end, so you never compress a photo you still need to edit.

Common questions

What image works best as a favicon? A simple, bold logo or a single letter — at 16px, fine details disappear. Square images work best, and a solid background colour keeps the icon visible on both light and dark browser tabs.

Which size do I actually need? A 32×32 or 48×48 icon covers desktop browser tabs; add 180×180 for Apple touch icons and 192px/512px if your site can be installed as an app. Downloading the full set covers everything.

Are my files uploaded to a server? No. The Favicon Generator runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and is never sent to ToolNest or anywhere else. Close the tab and everything is cleared.

One tool rarely finishes the whole job. The natural companions to this one are covered in the Image Resize guide and the Image Converter guide — between them, most image tasks can be handled end to end in the browser, with no installs and no accounts.
