Image Converter — How to Use It Online for Free
The Image Converter changes a picture from one format to another — PNG to JPG, JPG to WebP, WebP to PNG and so on. Different websites and apps accept different formats, and converting takes one click here instead of re-exporting the image from a heavy editor.
Format problems are common: a website designed before WebP existed refuses .webp files, a government form accepts only JPG, or a designer sends you a PNG when your tool needs JPG. Converting does not change the picture itself — only how it is stored — although JPG and WebP use lossy compression, so keep the quality slider high (90% is a good default) when the image matters.
How to use the Image Converter
- Drop your image in, or click to choose a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP file.
- See the current format and size, plus an estimate of the new size.
- Pick the target format — JPG, PNG or WebP — and set the quality slider if it appears.
- Click “Convert & download” to save the converted image.
A quick example
A supplier sends you a product photo as a WebP file, but the marketplace listing page accepts only JPG and PNG. Drop the file here, choose JPG at 90% quality, download — and the listing upload goes through without any other software.
Tips for better results
- Use WebP for your own website images — pages load noticeably faster.
- Keep a PNG master copy of logos; convert copies to JPG or WebP as needed.
- GIF and BMP files convert to a still image of their first frame.
Working with images online
A few ideas help every image job go right. First, always work on a copy — keep the original photo untouched, because edits like cropping and compression cannot be undone in the saved file. Second, know your formats: JPG for photos, PNG for logos and screenshots with sharp edges or transparency, and WebP when the smallest file matters and the destination supports it. Third, dimensions and file size are different problems: dimensions are measured in pixels (width × height), size in kilobytes — and forms often limit both. Finally, do the destructive steps last: crop and rotate first, resize next, and compress only at the end, so you never compress a photo you still need to edit.
Common questions
Which format should I choose? JPG is the safest choice for photos and uploads almost anywhere. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency, best for logos and screenshots. WebP gives the smallest files for websites, but some older apps cannot open it.
Why does converting PNG to JPG change the background? JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour in the JPG. If your logo must stay transparent, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Are my files uploaded to a server? No. The Image Converter runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and is never sent to ToolNest or anywhere else. Close the tab and everything is cleared.
One tool rarely finishes the whole job. The natural companions to this one are covered in the Image Resize guide and the Image Compressor guide — between them, most image tasks can be handled end to end in the browser, with no installs and no accounts.
